Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Genius in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had conceded ten goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or had there never been a binding element keeping it intact in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Reports that he might quit were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Presence

At least one man remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio during this campaign. He completed the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his owning club were pushing for him to extend his stay for another season. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He joined in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
