Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages providing entry to the facility... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
