Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, aside from his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
