World Health Organization Raises Warning Over Critical Scarcity of Weight-Loss Medications

Under one in 10 people who could benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy are able to get them, warns the World Health Organization as it releases its initial advice on the medications.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now classified as obese, it is calling for increased and just availability to GLP-1 medication.

Per estimates, over two billion will be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The latest guidance affirms that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with holistic and continuous treatment," said its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, limited production capacity, and supply-chain constraints are key obstacles to broad availability to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing considerable weight, says the organization.

Weight-Loss Drug Supply Crisis

Even under the present best projected outlook, the production of these medications would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, according to the WHO.

The advice urges countries and companies to increase availability, via approaches including patent sharing.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several countries in 2026.

How Obesity Injections Function

The injections replicate a body's own hormone to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and enhance the sense of being full so people reduce food intake.

People commonly start to lose weight within a few weeks of starting on the weekly injections.

Evidence suggests users may put most of the weight back on within a year of discontinuing the treatment, when their normal appetite return.

To be above a healthy weight elevates your chance for developing medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Obesity concerns individuals in every country and was linked to 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
